Spin ended with the alien Hypotheticals setting a vast Arch over the Indian Ocean. Those who sailed under it found themselves on Equatoria, another planet entirely.

In Axis, a secretive Equatorian community of Fourths - humans who've had their lives extended by illegal Martian technology - raised a boy, Isaac Dvali, to communicate with the Hypotheticals. Interstellar clouds of tiny fragmented Hypothetical nanomachines rained down on Equatoria, an some began to grow. Isaac and Turk Findley, a tough bush pilot an former drifter, were absorbed by a vast concatenation of those growths.

Now, Turk Findley has awakened ten thousand years later, to be collected by the people of Vox - an Equatorian group that's obsessed with the Hypotheticals. The Vox have been waiting for Turn and Isaac for a very long time. Meanwhile, the story of Turk and Isaac among the people of Vox is being scrawled in notebooks by a disturbed man in a hospital on twenty-first-century Earth, in the years following the Spin . . .

Vortex Spin Book 3 eBook Robert Charles Wilson

"Vortex" is one of those rare encounters that I could not put down and that then leave me behind sad because they conclude all too soon. Although the book is a direct sequel to "Axis" and concludes the "Spin" sequence, it can well be read alone without any loss of information or pleasure. In fact, it might be better more enjoyable to skip "Axis" (which honestly confused me more than it supported the story) even though a few characters are continuing into this book.

Wilson's storytelling is growing from book to book and I can't wait to see how it will progress in the future. It sucked me into the story right from page one. The characters have enough history and depth to be believable and mysterious at the same time. You can relate to them from the beginning with a good (and relevant) amount of background being released over time. While it was not quite clear to me where "Axis" was going (or wanting to go), the scope of the story of "Vortex" is nicely laid out in its grand scheme and - to say it - it's epic. Without spoiling anything, we get to know the Hypotheticals a little better before it all ends.

"Vortex" seems to be a fairly short read compared to other contemporary science fiction, but it touches on many topics of the genre almost en passant without discussing them at length. At the same time it blends with a somewhat ordinary thriller that hides its cliches pretty successfully until the very end. And where it doesn't hide them it is fun to keep you guessing.

If you liked "Spin" you will likely read this book anyway. If you felt that "Axis" was not up to par with the first book, don't give up and read this awesome conclusion. Everyone else, you should give this book a try either after reading "Spin" or by itself. If you usually don't like science fiction, here is your chance to try something new without (seemingly) straying too far from your beaten path. Or - to conclude with Rabelais' quote from the book - "I go to seek a great perhaps."

Vortex Spin Book 3 eBook Robert Charles Wilson Reviews

This is going to be one of those reviews that is difficult to write because I don't want to give away too much. I can say that this book has everything that I look for in a good scifi novel. It has incredible world-building. It has fascinating predictions about what the far future will be like, not only technologically, but also ecologically, politically and ethically. It has several well-drawn characters that I really cared about. The language is nimble, descriptive and inventive. And it has a very complex plot that bounces between two future eras and kept me curious about what was going on right up until the very end.

Speaking of which, what a whopper of an ending. There are not many trilogies that manage to finish up in a satisfactory way, but Vortex really did it right. In this book, Wilson not only ties up all the loose ends he began in Spin, he also produces a galaxy- and billenia-spanning epic that brings awe and wonder back to scifi. I believe a reader could completely understand and appreciate this book without reading the preceding two novels Spin and Axis, but there are special moments in each of those books (particularly Spin) which were great in and of themselves. Regardless of whether you choose to read Vortex alone or as the finale of a trilogy, you will learn the answers to all your questions about life, the universe and everything in this amazingly imagined story.
If u haven't read the prequels, read those first. All 3 of the "Spin" series rate a 4.5 to 5 as far as i am concerned. The expanse of concept, equating the universe, in finality, to the human mind is unique among the many science fiction novels i have read. Time becomes almost meaningless, when one can equate the firing across a human synapse, to light speed communication between star systems. Existence beyond that expanse into higher dimensional planes is postulated. Incredible
Something that consistently nagged at me during the first 2 books was the inconsistency of the timescale, e.g. characters being awed at other characters' apparently exceptional ages when according to what I could figure from the text they were maybe 60-80 at the most. It went off the deep end in this book. Apparently 10,000 years = 10 centuries??! In addition, I loved Spin's deep exploration into the characters' reactions to this bizarre thing that was happening and throwing their lives into chaos, and particularly their relationships with each other. It felt like, as the series progressed, Wilson moved away from that and into the more standard SF focus on fleshing out the world/circumstances that the characters found themselves in. The only feelings I had toward Turk were carried over from the last book, and I had no idea why I should care about Treya/Allison and even less of an idea how or why she and Turk apparently fell in love. It just kind of showed up in one chapter and I was supposed to accept it. The Sandra and Bose subplot was better, but it was also weirdly inconsistent in terms of the danger and potential consequences they were facing, like it tried to be a suspense thriller that just sort of fizzled out at the end. By the end I was reading out of mild interest in what would finally happen to Orrin and a sense of obligation to see this series that I had loved so much at the beginning through.
I like this book and thought the writing was excellent, it flows smoothly and I didn't find any errors. To me the storyline was better than Axis, but it would be hard to top Spin, which I thought was one of the best books I have ever read. Vortex is good, but at two points it felt like it was going in to more detail or explanation than necessary. The rest of the book was fantastic. I'm usually not into trilogies because I think a lot of times the writer kind of run out of steam or interest in their characters. That is not the case with these books, although lead of the main characters do change the story line remains very good. Vortex being the last in the series I would highly recommend this book as well worth reading. I really enjoyed it.
To sum it up Spin=Just Phenomenal, Axis= Very good , Vortex = Amazingly good
