For Matt and his flying club, there weren't any options left. Trapped residents, threatened towns and one small airstrip safely upwind of the fire line.
It's not a promising position, but they volunteer to help anyway, hoping a protected position and a close base might make a difference to the fire fighters.
And then the wind changes.
Fire Season edition by VH Folland Literature Fiction eBooks
It's fire season and fires are blazing worse then ever. The fire department and volunteer recruits are overwhelmed as they begin to accept help from local crop sprayers to try and contain the inferno. Matt has already allowed his nephew Rob to take out one of his planes to help with evacuation efforts, but when he is told the threat is rising for Brooks Vale and he needs to dump his fuel tank- he decides it would be a waste not to use the fuel instead. He fuels up his crop sprayer and fills the tank with water to join the effort. The fire is winning and as the threat rises at his home airstrip of Brooks Vale and the surrounding community, hard decisions must be made to save the town or themselves.

I really enjoyed this book. It was slow at times and spoke technically about the fire efforts and plane manuevers a lot. There are many back and forth missions of water drops that are uneventful, but not so much so to make me lose interest. I feel like I actually learned quite a bit about small planes and fire battles! The characters are rich and their interactions natural and unforced. I loved the multi layered personalities each character brought forward.
I hit the climax of the story a bit late, about two thirds of the way through, but because of the strong characters and emotions I felt for them in their situation it carried through for a strong finish. A wonderful and realistic story. This book is certainly suitable for teenagers, young adults, and adults. There are only a few brief moments of strong language, but it is fully in context to the moment.
If you know someone who loves planes or fire fighting, this would be especially great for them- but I wouldn't limit this book to just that crowd. It was entertaining, a great vacation book.

Fire Season by V.H. Folland is a great read for those who like suspense and maybe even a little learning. This story takes place in Brooke's Vale and tells us about a depressed man and what he and his flying club must do to save their remote home and the survivors that they can from out of control wildfires that are Hell bent on destroying everything in the way.
If you ever wondered what it is like to be the pilot who is trying to put out all the wildfires that all the dry hot "fire seasons" bring and then having to choose between your home and those you care about or the lives and homes of others you volunteered and promised to protect then I would give this book a read. It has such technical detail and imagery it seems like you are apart of it all too.

Format , Paperback
At sixty years old, Matt is a crop dusting pilot who owns a private airstrip and loves to restore vintage airplanes. Living in the beautifully forested valley of Brooke's Vale, Matt and his friends share a passion for flying and their small community. During the fire season, threatening lightening storms set fire around the region and all hands, even civilians, are called to help either fight the fire or help with evacuation efforts. Matt does the best he can, but after witnessing the deaths of a family trapped by the fire his depression grounds him. Once the winds change, however, and Brooke's Vale is threatened Matt will have to find inner strength to save those he loves.
VH Folland's "Fire Season" is the perfect novel to be made into a Family or Hallmark Channel movie. The small town setting in the Vale is unique and the reader cannot help but be immersed by the wonderful narrative describing the natural beauty of the area. At the same time, life can be tenuous during the fire season because in a moments notice, the isolation of their remote town can be a death trap. Folland builds this tension throughout and at a wonderful pace. He also demonstrates great command and love for piloting small craft. I learned a considerable amount regarding the challenges and dangers of flying a crop duster not to mention the physical toll a pilot undergoes under normal circumstances, but with the additional challenge of cross winds and thermals created from a raging fire storm along with reduced visibility and a smoke filled cabin, it is downright harrowing!
Action, adventure, danger, and heroics abound in VH Folland's "Fire Season" and readers are sure to enjoy this debut novel. It is available in Paperback and is $3.45 on .
